The Great Builder Ramses II

by Caius Marcellus

In 1279 BCE, the gods deemed it my time to rule. With the passing of my father, the great Pharaoh, I ascended to the throne, my heart filled with reverence for the responsibilities bestowed upon me. He was a revered leader whose wisdom guided Egypt through times of prosperity and challenge. The weight of the crown was heavy, symbolizing not only the immense duties and expectations now resting upon my shoulders but also the legacy of my forebears that I was entrusted to uphold.

I walked among the grand monuments that towered over the Nile and the bustling cities my father showered with prosperity. Determined to lead Egypt to even greater heights, my first task, was to venerate and send my father into the afterlife to join Osiris. I vowed to honor my ancestors by, building temples that would display their divine gifts and accomplishments my father bestowed upon the people of the nile.

We undertook the monumental task of constructing grand edifices to honor my father, Seti I, whose reign laid the groundwork for Egypt’s flourishing era. Among these projects was the magnificent Temple of Seti I at Abydos, a testament to his divinity and lasting influence. The temple, adorned with intricate carvings and inscriptions, celebrated his victories and accomplishments, serving as a sacred site where priests could perform rituals in his memory. It featured seven chapels dedicated not only to Seti but also to the great deities of our pantheon, ensuring that future generations would remember the profound impact of his leadership. This temple was not only a tribute to Seti’s legacy but a symbol of continuity and piety, capturing the splendor of our history and the devotion with which I upheld his honor.

In addition to the Temple of Seti I at Abydos, I commissioned other magnificent works to venerate my father’s legacy and elevate his name to the realm of the divine. The grand temple complex of Karnak witnessed expansions and embellishments dedicated to Seti I, with colossal statues and intricate reliefs depicting his achievements, including the construction of the Hypostyle Hall, and showcasing his divine relationship with the gods. Each wall and pillar conveyed stories of his victories and his role as a just ruler favored by the deities. Furthermore, the mortuary temple at Thebes was a marvel of architectural splendor, designed to honor Seti I’s passage to the afterlife. Its sacred halls were the settings for solemn ceremonies, where priests invoked his spirit and appealed for his guidance and protection. Through these grand projects, I strived to enshrine Seti I’s memory in the fabric of our civilization, ensuring that the people of Egypt would revere him as a leader of unparalleled wisdom and greatness.
