Step into My Sandals: The Early Life of Ramses the Great

by Caius Marcellus

Ramses the Second, known to many as Ramses the Great. Reigned over six decades, during which transformed Egypt into a powerful empire. These ambitious building projects, including the magnificent temples at Abu Simbel and the expansive Ramesseum still dot the landscape. I led my armies into epic battles, most notably against the Hittites at the Battle of Kadesh, where my military prowess shone through. I am the great Diplomat, King and Pharaoh.

Just before I was born, the 18th Dynasty had come to an end. A vizier to the 18th, and my namesake, Ramses I was elevated to Pharaoh and started the 19th Dynasty. This time marked a period of significant change in ancient Egypt. The end of the 18th Dynasty was characterized by political turbulence and religious upheaval, largely due to the reign of Akhenaten, who drastically altered the religious landscape by introducing monotheism dedicated to the Aten. His focus on religious reform left the traditional power structures unsettled. Following his death, his successors, including Tutankhamun, sought to restore the old gods and stabilize the nation. However, strife and a lack of strong leadership created a power vacuum, ultimately leading to the rise of the 19th Dynasty with Ramses I, a military leader who restored stability and ushered in an era of prosperity and expansion.

The Dawn of My Destiny

I was born in 1303 BCE, the son of Pharaoh Seti I and Queen Tuya. My birth heralded a new era for Egypt, one filled with promise and potential for prosperity and expansion. From a young age, I was groomed to lead, learning the intricacies of governance, military strategy, and the divine responsibilities of a pharaoh, which included serving as a bridge between the gods and the people. My education was comprehensive, encompassing not only the art of leadership but also the significance of diplomacy and the importance of maintaining order and stability throughout the kingdom. As I grew, I was also taught the rich history and culture of Egypt, understanding my place within this grand lineage and the expectations that came with it.

The Nurturing of a Future Pharaoh

My father, Seti I, saw potential in me early on, recognizing qualities that would prepare me for leadership. He appointed me as co-regent, which was an immense honor and responsibility, entrusted to me perhaps because of my keen interest in the affairs of state and governance. This role allowed me to learn the ropes of governance and leadership while still under his protective wing, providing me with invaluable guidance and mentorship. During this time, I delved deep into the intricacies of diplomacy, administration, and military strategy, learning from experienced advisors and observing the workings of the court.

I accompanied him on numerous military campaigns, where I witnessed firsthand the valor, strategy, and tactical acumen required to defend and expand our great empire. These expeditions were not merely about warfare; they were journeys into the hearts and cultures of other lands, offering lessons in both conquest and peacekeeping. Observing how he led his troops and negotiated with allies and adversaries alike was both inspiring and educational. His ability to form alliances and navigate the delicate balance of power was remarkable, leaving a lasting impression on me.

These formative years were crucial, setting the stage for my eventual ascent to the throne and shaping the ruler I was destined to become. They instilled in me a sense of duty and pride in our heritage, as well as the resilience needed to face the challenges of leadership. This foundation ensured that I was not merely inheriting a throne, but stepping into a role for which I had been thoroughly prepared.
